Almost every business in today’s world, depend on Information Technology (IT) and their ability to create systems specifically for that particular business’s needs. There are many systems that may be utilized such as transaction Processing Systems (1), Information and Decision Supports Systems (2)to name a few.
It is up to the business Managers to decide which systems best suit their needs in order to operate, and if it necessary to have a system in place in order to operate the business. Can each transaction be a manual one or can the business afford and be more profitable by have different systems? The actual creation of the system, depending on the business’s needs, is called System Development. However, before the development of a system is generated, a serious of steps must take place before hand.
Systems Investigations is gathering all the facts and understanding the needs of the business and is it worth creating the system. To address the value of the system, an analysis must be performed that will assist in the decision of what the opportunities are with the system in place.
Once the decision is made, there must be a Design of the System. This is where the business and IT must communicate and “speak the same language” to describe its needs. Sometimes it better to have a person in between the business and IT that understands both the business and the complications of IT. Should an agreement be made on all the criteria and the outcome that the business needs, IT will implement the system (software, hardware, database, etc.).
After implementation the operation of the system, there is one team of people that should continue to evaluate, monitor and have the ability to change the system, again based on the systems needs. This is call Systems Maintenance.
